The Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach, CA is the first LEED Platinum project in Orange County. The facility features extensive use of solar technology which provides 100% of the building's power needs.
The ENC serves as a landmark of sustainable design for neighbors and visitors alike. The project is comprised of two individual structures, one public, one private, between which is an exterior breezeway and meeting area. Designed to capture as much daylight as possible through its large glass north wall, the main structure was also designed to maximize natural ventilation and proximity to the ocean. A large array of photovoltaic panels on the south facing roof provides enough energy to make the center a "net zero" energy facility. The ENC has made their use of solar technology part of their curriculum.
